How To Identify a Pit Bull

There has been much woofing about how to identify a Pit Bull type dog. This week a friend of mine was given a real Pit Bull test. Forget your DNA or your pictures to tell you, we have the sure-fire method.

This is Sully. Sully is a Pit Bull mix, a Certified Therapy Dog, a real AmbassaDog and an all-around good boy!

Sully & his Mom encountered a woman yesterday who knew the sure-fire way to identify a Pit Bull. When she was told Sully is a Pit Bull mix, she said, "I can tell if he has Pit Bull in him." She held up three fingers and placed them across Sully's nose and said, "Yep, he passes the three-fingers test, he has Pit Bull in him."

Sully's Mom showed us how to give the test.

Yep, Sully passed so he's definitely a Pit Bull.

How about me?

I yam a Pit Bull too!

We wanted to test this theory, so here's my friend Ruby Roo.

Yep, Ruby Roo is surely a Pit Bull.

But then something happened. We tested 14 lb. Rascal.

Rut Roh! Rascal's a Pit Bull too!

So, we needed to test this theory further. I know my older sister Mollie is a real Mini-Schnauzer. She is not a Pit Bull! So, we tested her.

Oh no! Mollie's a Pit Bull too. She must be a mix!

So, I guess it is very, very hard to tell just by looking at us if we are Pit Bulls or not. You should never judge a book by its cover. Who knew that Rascal and Mollie were both Pit Bulls!?!?

I guess when Mollie & I are on our walks and people ask what kind of dogs we are, my Mom can just tell them we are both Pit Bulls!

  1. I hope that animal control and stupid city officials don't get any ideas on testing pit bulls this way. To funny!

  4. So how exactly do you tell? Is it the shape of the eyes or head when you put your fingers up, or if the dog doesn't bite, it has pit bull in him?

    2. you can't tell, unless you do a blood test.. and it won't say Pit Bull. That BREED of dog does not exist!. A Pit Bull is a fighting dog. ANY BREED can be a fighting dog! More tan likely the dog is a staffie or some sort of Bully breed. there are so many.. and with crossbreeding to get that special dog, people have created so many variables in the line that you could have a dog with 5 different breeds in it. That dogs could be used in fighting, or for a companion too. the problem with bullie breeds is that they often fall into the wrong hands.. We are trying hard to show that bullie breeds can and DO make wonderful family members. I should know as i have three as of last March 2012. I will always be an advocate for them!

    3. I think it's meant to be if you put 3 fingers on the bridge of their nose and their eyes are as wide apart as 3 fingers (or wider) then they're a pit bull so the last 2 dogs DON'T pass the test (their eyes are closer together) however - any large brachycephalic breed will be a "pit bull" with this test, and also some non bracycephalic breeds with large heads (Great Danes for e.g.). It's not a good test but I don't think you were doing it right nontheless :P

  9. Cheers to you for this. Ran into it surfing. My first dog was a Whippet that was accused of being a Pit Bull. It's like society never grew out of pointing and yelling "Witch!". Never owned a Pit Bull, but I work with reactive dogs. And as someone that deals with dog aggression I can tell you these are the easiest dogs to work with. I will put myself in high risk situations with Pit Bulls because I know those dogs can be reasoned with. And never once was I proven wrong. I'm a huge opponent of BSl as a result of my work with dogs. I had the honor of working with former game dogs. Those break your heart. I wish you knew what it was like to watch a dog like that play with another dog and love life.

People ask me all the time what breed is best as a good family dog and they jump when I recommend a Pit bull. They are the most abused breed of dog, and we turn around and fault them where people have failed. Owners, fans, we gotta step up and save the most stable of breed of dog we have before it's too late.

    1. Thank you, I wish more people could see the truth of these "nanny dogs". While I am not a dog trainer, I have had dogs of all breeds and sizes and was won over by my first pitbull. I would do demonstrations for anyone who would watch just to show the reality of these dogs and their behavior. Nose to nose eye contact, reaching into the food bowl while she ate, letting her growl and tug on a rope toy then I'd put my hand against her mouth and she would let go, having her go full attack mode when someone knocked on the door then turn into the sweetest dog in the world when I told the person they could come into the house. I don't intend to ever own another breed.

    2. I can't agree with your opinion though I respect it. I've heard far too many stories of "gentle" family pit bulls going suddenly "game" and attacking children and even their adult owners for no GOOD reason (having a bone taken away, running past shrieking are NOT good reasons for a FAMILY dog to attack). I really don't agree with the idea they make good family pets - NO high drive working breed does and this breed was originally produced to fight to the death (i.e. it doesn't want to stop once it has started a fight). This trait makes it the worst possible breed for a family pet since if it DOES make a mistake and attack someone or something it shouldn't, it will be nigh impossible to break it off with bare hands alone. Now I accept that some "pit bulls" (maybe more correctly called Amstaffs) have been bred just for looks and for better temperament (i.e. remove the working drive) and THESE dogs MAY be better pets... however even show line GSDs and showline border collies retain their instincts to herd in many cases and can be found harassing livestock, cats, children, bicycles etc if not very well trained (and even sometimes the breed instincts are so strong they resist all training attempts and the dog must be kept leashed around such distractions).

  10. OMG, I'm a "pit bull".

  11. If it looks like a pit bull, put it down just to be safe. At least the fatalities by dog bite will go DOWN that way. The problem is that they snap unexpectedly regardless of how long they have been "sweet". Also, they cause way more damage than the average dog bite because of their death shake style of attack. There's no issue with loving a dog when it's "good" just as long as you react just as rationally when the dog is "bad" (aggressive).

    1. Dear Anonymous - Why would you even post this on a blog that belongs to a pit bull type dog? You are simply looking for an argument. Really easy to hide behind your computer screen, call yourself "anonymous" and spread nothing but lies. Mr. Buddy Rose was so horribly abused by humans that he could not walk, but that's okay...every single day he changes people's minds about pit bull type dogs...and he will continue to do just that. You just keep hiding behind your computer and spewing lies and untruths.

    2. WOW! Your comment is so sad. You spread lies filled with YOUR fear based solely on YOUR FEAR. All dogs bite that way. All dogs bite IF they are trained to, even pit bulls. I used to be afraid of them till I spent time with them. Now I own one and love him dearly. Do not make decisions based on fear, they usually are wrong and destructive, like now.

  13. LOL!!! great!!! people are not very educated about dog types.. There really is NO bred of dog called a Pit Bull.. it's a name given by thugs who fight dogs of various breeds.. but, mostly just bullies breeds..because we are eager to please and loyal and often we are skinny dogs without the huge muzzle.. we have three Bully mixes here.. and ONE of them is a rednosed.. one is a brindle and the other is white with freckles and brindle spots.. but only one of them has the big jaws and fat head.,. Phat Boii is a rescue like Buddy Rose. With the same issues..and he failed the CGC due to DA issues, but we're working on him. To be honest, it's better than what the shelter had plans for him. He is a great dog and I love him like he was my child.. he has a lil bro who is a chi rat and three sisters and even three cats.. he is so good with my kids and want to say hi to everyone.. but, is a tad DA around new males dogs too.. So what.. I'm not giving up on him and he will have a home with me till he is ready to cross the rainbow bridge and leave me.. that will be a bad day for me for SURE!

  14. If the breed isnt called pitbull what exactly is it called if you dont mind me asking and is there seriously a way to tell if the dog is purebred?

  15. For Anonymous who posted august 13,2013 11:04 am, pit bull refers to any member of the following breeds: american staffordshire terrier, staffordshire bull terrier, and american pit bull terrier. The akc doesnt really recognize the american pit bull terrier, but it is still a breed because there are other registries. I have a pit bull mix and love her to death :) that was an interesting article, and does help to show how terrible people can be at recognizing pit bulls. I only wish legislators would stop hating pit bulls long enough to see how much we love our dogs.

  17. AnonymousAugust 23, 2012 at 12:14 PM is a moron who should be lethaly injected because no matter how nice he might seem, He could turn and attack someone since that's what he says Pitt Bulls do. I have had 3 who lived their entire life's without even snapping at anyone. Experts all say that Pitts are good, gentle dogs unless they are trained to be mean which you could train any dog to do. He hides behind Anonymous because he's is a chicken shit afraid to say his mind where anyone could know who he is. My dogs have been VERY sweet and gentle for their entire lives.
